We recently got a call about a little pug boy that a good samaritan was concerned about. We were told he was kept tied to the porch with his dog house and that something was wrong with his eyes. Within a day, we had one of our volunteers on the road going to get this little pugger out of there. Enter, Silas, Si for short. He had some of the worst, most obviously ignored dry eyes we'd ever seen. His foster mom immediately got to it and started flushing his eyes to get the hard shell of dried mucus off of them. His eyes are looking better, but the damage has likely been done and Si probably has limited eye sight. We'll update his info soon after he sees the doctor and really settles into his foster home.

**UPDATE FROM SI'S FOSTER MOM** 12/12/12

Silas' background may be uncertain, but there are a few things that I, his foster mom, are sure of. Silas is an incredibly handsome, sweet, laid-back senior boy who deserves the perfect home in which he can spend his elderly years. He spends most of his day napping on various beds, on throw pillows that his foster pug siblings have pushed off the couch, or in places where he has successfully found the rare, upstate New York December ray of sunshine. When he is not napping, he enjoys jaunts around his fenced-in backyard making sure to take in each and every smell. If he's not ready to come in, he'll head in the opposite direction of my calls, as if to say, 'not now mom, give me just five more minutes.' He looks forward to meal time and is well aware of the sound that his favorite bag of treats makes upon opening. He sits and waits patiently amidst his foster brothers and sister for his turn at an Apple Bacon flavored Fruitables Skinny Mini.

Silas is a 'senior' at 8 years old, but still full of spunk. He has full range of motion in all of his joints and does not show signs of any luxating patella. His front shoulder muscle is weak on one side and has been attributed to being kept confined to a crate far too small and spending significant time sleeping in one position. With regular exercise he will regain that strength. He is vision impaired, but is able to sense changes in light. He orients himself to new places easily, but is unable to conquer steps of any sort. His vision impairment is the result of years of neglect for a case of dry eye. To keep him comfortable and as pain free as possible, he receives over the counter lubricating gel drops or opthalmic ointment to his eyes several times daily. He is crate trained and is fine-tuning his bathroom manners, which have already improved greatly since his neuter surgery.

Silas' ideal forever retirement home would have plenty of places to nap, a fenced-in backyard in which to frolic, an unlimited amount of soft, bite-sized treats, and one full of that special senior kind of love.
