11/20/2011: MASON IS PENDING ADOPTION!

Mason has come a long way after just a few weeks in rescue. Mason was found the day before halloween scratching on a strangers door in deplorable shape.

We stepped up to help this handsome little guy out. Mason was very underweight, covered in ticks and had obvious trauma to his right eye. Tests later revealed that Mason was positive for Lyme Disease and Anaplasmosis, both tick borne diseases. On Halloween, Mason went in for immediate surgery in hopes of saving his eye and keeping it from rupturing. He was also placed on medication to fight off the lyme disease and anaplasmosis and sent back to his foster home in his Halloween costume- a shiny new E-Collar- or better known as a lampshade.

Mason got off to a rough start with the other dogs. He was not happy to share his food or his treats. As he settled into his foster home and understood that food was a regular part of his daily routine, he began to calm down and become much more accepting of the other dogs. He now spends his entire day hanging out with the others and has transformed into one fantastic, loving puggy boy. He loves to take naps on the couch and is a great snuggler who loves to sleep beside his person. He especially loves to lay on his back and have his belly rubbed.

Mason is becoming more and more playful with his foster family as the days go. He is not yet housebroken, but we've made quite a bit of progress. At first he wouldn't go outside unless one of his people were walking out with him, but now he is the first through the doorway to get out the backyard and comes in after he is done doing his business and playing in the leaves. If Mason is encouraged to go out every few hours, he will go through the day accident free. He does not go to the door to let you know he has to go, so his new family will have to continue escorting him outside and praising him for a job well done in order to solidify the habit. In just a few weeks, he has made quite a bit of progress and he is very food motivated so we have no doubt that he will continue improving.

Mason has gained 5 lbs and is now ready for his forever home. He needs to gain a bit more but he certainly doesn't look starved like he did at first. He is a bigger pug- with a long body and legs. He should be 26 lbs or so at an ideal weight. Getting him to gain weight is no challenge at all- he loves to eat! Mason would do fine with or without children, but we feel children 6 years or older would be best. He loves walks, riding in the car, poking his head out the window and of course, treats!
