Niko was picked up as a stray and taken to a high kill shelter. No one came to claim Niko and within days, he was on borrowed time. It is heartbreaking to see a senior in a shelter and even more heartbreaking is the fact that seniors often do not get adopted and are first on the list of dogs to be euthanized.

Now that Niko has joined our rescue, it is clear that life has not been too kind to him. He suffered from quite a bit of hairloss due to flea allergy and overall was very lackluster and unhealthy- as well as underweight. After a few trips to our vet, Niko's health has improved drastically. He does have a few health issues that come with age including a cataract and possible vision impairment in one eye as well as a heart murmur. Neither of these require any medication or treatment at this time. Within the past 3 months, all of Niko's fur has grown back, he has put on quite a bit of weight (he actually borderlines “chunky). He has really come out of his shell and blossomed into quite a friendly, happy little guy.

We are very proud of Niko. He is now mostly housebroken and rarely has an accident. He walks well on a leash and looks forward to his daily walks. He likes other dogs, and people. Niko does not like cats, though. It is almost funny to see how spunky he can be when a cat approaches him. If the cat keeps its distance, Niko is more accepting. Niko also needs a home with no young children. Teenage children would be fine, but children running up to him may startle him. Niko is quite laid back and loves to spend his time resting on his bed or in his person's lap. He likes belly rubs and to be brushed as well. He gladly comes when he is called and would make a great companion for someone who lives a calm lifestyle.

Niko is such a sweet boy and we can't wait to find him the perfect forever home where he will be loved, cared for and a part of the family. Please consider opening your heart and home to a senior dog- they are the most grateful dogs and you will certainly not regret it.
