Velvet was turned in to an overcrowded shelter among several other poodles. She was filthy, matted and in need of some help.

Velvet is a 2 year old poodle. She is about 10 lbs and just a little larger than Forrest and Pete who came into rescue with her. She is also on the thin side and could stand to gain a pound or 2. So much is unknown about Velvet but we do know that she has mothered at least one litter- probably 2 or 3. She has never had the opportunity to be part of a family and does not know what it feels like to be loved, fed well and cared for. We are trying to show her that now, but she remains a bit on the timid side.

We can’t blame her for her apprehension. All she knows about people is that they did not give her enough food to eat; that they let her have babies and then took those babies away; that they let her hair grow over her eyes and never relieved the pain of twisting mats and then they dumped her in a scary place.

Now, Velvet is in foster care where she has as much food as she wants, people willing to hold and pet her gently, other dogs to play with and has a snazzy new hair do! This is not the kind of dog that is going to bring you instant gratification. Velvet requires a patient, loving human. One who will take the time to show her the good in people. She is never mean, but is often understandably frightened. Velvet will need a home that is low key. No young children are a must. She would not harm them but would be happiest in a calm place with one or two adults that are willing to love her and help her along. With time and patience, Velvet is sure to be a wonderful companion.
