Tinker is a 4 year old Bichon Frise/Poodle mix who was originally surrendered to our rescue because her owners felt they didn’t have enough time for her.Onc We’re not sure about the truth in that, but when a dog comes into our rescue, we promise to do everything we can for them. Tinker is no exception to that rule.

Tinker displays fear based aggression. However, she’s not a “mean” dog. If you ask her foster mom about Tinker and her interaction, she will tell you that Tinker is so loving and patient and that she sleeps with her at night and gives her kisses. If you ask Tinker’s foster dad, he will tell you that although she plays favorites with his wife, Tinker is still loving and affectionate towards him and is always happy to be on his lap. However, Tinker doesn’t trust everyone. She doesn’t run after and chase people. She’s too frightened to do that. However, when someone forces themselves upon Tinker when she is afraid she will snap. We haven’t quite figured out the rhyme nor rhythm of how Tinker chooses her friends. Sometimes, she is instantly responsive to people, eager to climb on their lap and say hello and other times, Tinker is immediately frightened and doesn’t want the attention of a stranger. She does seem to prefer women over men. It goes without saying that a home with children would not be suitable for Tinker. We feel she would fare best as a companion for an older, laid back individual or couple.

Having a fearful dog like Tinker is a challenge, however it is realistic to work with her needs. We’re looking for a responsible owner that understands that taking Tinker to a festival full of strange people is not a good choice and that setting up a baby gate and giving Tinker a safe place when company comes over is a wise decision. We do know that Tinker attaches closely to her people and is quite the lover when she does so. She is fairly young and we see her youthful side when toys are present. She likes to chase a ball and play with squeaky toys. She also likes treats, which she takes nicely. She’s been with us for quite some time, and still gives the groomer a run for her money, but has made improvements. She is a healthy girl, and really needs an experienced and responsible person to call her own. Tinker is dog friendly and fostered with other dogs.

We are extra cautious when placing a dog like Tinker in a forever home. However, it’s not her fault that she is so guarded. While we do not know what caused this behavior, we do know that it’s up to people like us to right the wrongs of others and show man’s best friend that we can be their best friend.
