Chase is a beautiful Boxer mix pup. He came into our rescue at 9 weeks old with severe demodectic mange. He and his sister were surrendered to a high kill shelter in Kentucky after several home remedies, including dousing them in motor oil failed to cure the mange. The shelter intended to put these seemingly hopeless pups down immediately, but at the last second, someone stepped up and offered to take them home until a rescue could be found.

Demodectic mange is not contagious but is transmitted from mother to pup during birth. Some dogs are born with a resistance to it and other dogs, like Chase lack any resistance. As he grows into adulthood, he should build some immunity to it, but for now his treatment must remain ongoing- and will probably continue until he is 8-12months old. Otherwise, he is a very happy, healthy boy.

Chase has lots of big pup energy and just loves other dogs; big and small. His ideal home would have another active dog in the home and a fenced in yard so he can run freely. He is being fostered with young children and does very well with them, though he has taken a liking to one of their dinosaur toys. He loves all people and has yet to meet a stranger! Chase is really a big baby! He was so sick when he came into rescue and has made such tremendous improvements, we couldn’t help but rock them to sleep at night. He thinks he is a lapdog, which is for certain!

Chase can go to his forever home any time now, but please know that demodectic mange of this severity is not something we can treat and cure overnight. He will need medication throughout his first year and to see the vet for an occasional skin scraping. With adulthood, we do not expect his mange to flare further but can be brought on by stress, so it’s important that he is always monitored for a reoccurrences. Chase is being fostered in Rochester.
