Meet our volunteer favorite "Sissy"! Everyone who meets this sweetheart falls in love with her happy and loving demeanor. We met Sissy at a shelter in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was seized by the dog warden for neglect and abuse along with recently adopted BPSBR grad Fred the Bassett Hound. She came in severely emaciated, full of worms, and missing quite a lot of hair. While in the shelter she caught Kennel Cough, which rapidly escalated to bilateral pneumonia. She was so sick that she was sneezing and coughing blood. We had to have her hospitalized for 10 days for treatment. We are happy to report that she has recovered quite well and is now thriving. Currently, she is in boarding with the wonderful staff at Canine Kennels of Clarence while we search for a foster home or adopter with a cat free home. Sissy does great with medium to large dogs, and we will be testing her with small dogs very soon. She is NOT cat friendly, thus requiring a home withgout cats. Her hair loss has been diagnosed as stress and allergy related, so Sissy will require a grain free kibble diet. She was skin scraped several times to be sure she does not have mange, but is still being treated with Revolution just in case. At just shy of 50 pounds, she is VERY underweight, so we are dooing our best to fatten her up so she can be spayed and have her tail amputated. Sissy suffers from "Happy Tail Syndrome" which is an injury to her tail that keeps reopening and bleeding whenever she wags her tail, which is ALL THE TIME! Our sweet Sissy is a happy, happy girl with lots of energy to spare. She loves going for walks, playing tug of war, and going for car rides. We've found walking her while using a Martingale style collar helps her walk without pulling. Even at age 5 and being so sick, she remains a strong, energetic girl. She lights up when she sees children and loves their company. Because of her size and strength, she is able to knock over small children, so supervision is necessary. (Any child in the presence of a dog should be carefully supervised, regardless.) She LOVES peanut butter filled kong toys, and will settle in to her crate to enjoy her yummy treat! All in all, Sissy is a wonderful companion dog for an active household. She wants nothing more than a little play time with her people, and then to curl up next to you with her head in your lap. We would LOVE to get this girl out of boarding and into a home as soon as possible. We're sure she'd love it too.
